You could try connecting using a better quality usb cable. I have some (cheap) usb cables that produce similar results. If I use one of my better quality cable, it works fine.

I'm awaiting a port to Z-Uno too! Combined with OpenTerm library (which also needs to be ported) this makes an awesome way to create your own Z-Wave enabled thermostat.

Those dc-dc converters are really dirt cheap pre-fabricated.
