Are Ring Accessories locked to the Ring controller?

I know Ring uses Z-Wave, and that you can use some generic Z-Wave accessories with the Ring controller (smoke alarms/locks etc), but can you use the Ring supplied motion sensor etc. with a generic Z-Wave controller? If not, do you know why?

I would expect that you can since Ring uses Z-Wave Plus and Z-Wave Plus is very very interoperable
