I hope this is the place to ask these questions. I have a newer model Iris indoor smart plug that I 'm trying to connect to. When trying to join I can see that it's trying or at least some type of conversation is going on but the server monitor only shows me fail. How do I troubleshoot what is going on so I can add it to my system?

You do not give a lot of detail. I found this datasheet that seems to fit your description. Does not give a lot of relevant detail about the device though. It also lacks information that tells me the device is Z-Wave certified. Could not trace it in the Pepper1 database either.
My general advice is to stay away from such devices
